From her own experience of knowing her privilege but still having difficulties accepting it, Gay talks about other people who make accusation of their privilege.

Despite some certain privilege Gay has in her life, she still sometimes confronts irritating situations where people look down on her skin color. She is woman of color who was brought up in a happy middle class family.

The significant difference between people’s poverty in her fatherland and her family’s easy life in the United States makes Gay acknowledge her privilege. The author begins with a personal story about her trip to Haiti. “Peculiar Benefits” by Roxane Gay argues about people’ acknowledgement of privilege. In my opinion, this writing is persuasive thanks to the author’s ethos, excellent diction, good supporting evidence, and logical organization. Roxane Gay’s purpose here is to argue that people should acknowledge and be proud of their privilege instead of trying to degrade themselves or make any accusation of it. I believe the intended ones are those who possess some certain privilege but do not appreciate it. I chose to write about the essay “Peculiar Benefits” by Roxane Gay because I was impressed by and curious about its title.
